Norway has been a pioneer in the development of floating wind technology, leveraging its strong maritime expertise and favorable wind conditions. Norway began exploring floating wind concepts in the early 2000s, focusing on technology that could be deployed in deeper waters where traditional fixed-bottom turbines are not feasible. The first significant pilot project was the Hywind Demo in 2009, developed by Equinor. Following the success of pilot projects, Norway has advanced to larger commercial ventures. Notable is the Hywind Scotland project, which is now operational and showcases the potential for floating wind farms. The Norwegian government has been proactive in establishing a supportive regulatory framework for offshore renewable energy, including floating wind, aiming to facilitate future projects.

Norway aims to significantly increase its offshore wind capacity, with ambitious targets for floating wind farms by 2030 and beyond. The government is exploring areas for potential floating wind farms along its coastline. Norway aims to install at least 1.5GW of floating wind capacity by 2030, with aspirations to scale up to 3-4 GW by 2040.
Norway seeks to strenghten international partnerships to share knowledge and technology, enhancing the global floating wind market. With all of the above taken into account, it’s recommended to join the upcoming Floating Wind Days, to share knowledge and build up networks, to partner up in the floating wind energy market!

Floating Wind Days

The Floating Wind Days, taking place from May 21-22, 2025, in Haugesund, Norway, is organized by the Norwegian Offshore Wind. Norwegian Offshore Wind is the largest representative body for the offshore wind industry in Norway. They aim to establish world leading supply chains with floating offshore wind. With more than 350 members ranging from small startups to the large developers, they are the biggest industry cluster in Norway.

The Floating Wind Days is the  most innovative meeting place for international floating wind, which helps to drive the industry forward.

• Drive the industry forward: get involved in the major discussions and play your part in sharping this new industry
• Connect with the international industry: network and do business with the key people in floating wind!
• Challenge your thinking: what learning should we leave behind and which new ideas should we take with us?
• Explore new technologies: meet and hear international companies pitching their innovations, aimed at bringing costs down and making floating wind commercially competitive.

Holland Home of Wind Energy (HHWE) aims to organize a Netherlands participation at the Floating Wind Days in 2025, combined with a NL delegation visit with components such as a company visit or B2B matchmaking. More information about the preliminary agenda will be shared soon.
